Garden District Neighborhood Association (GDNA) is working to beautify the “public face” of our neighborhood. The neighborhood identification sign pictured above advertise our identity as a safe, accessible, and attractive neighborhood to do business in and to call home.
Our goal is to install the beautiful Neighborhood Identification Sign pictured above on existing street name poles at 54 entry point corners to our residential streets. The durable screen-printed signs will be installed at the entrances to the residential streets off of Grant, Speedway, Swan, Alvernon, Pima and Columbus. According to City regulations, signs cannot be placed at major intersections, nor in the interior of the neighborhood.
Signs must be installed in pairs on each side of the pole that supports the street name signs on residential streets at entrances to the neighborhood. One pair of ID signs cost $150 to be fabricated and installed on each corner. A map of sign locations can be found at thegardendistrict.org
WE DID IT!
All 54 entrances to our neighborhood will have signage to announce to Tucson that Garden District is a safe, accessible, attractive place to do business in and call home. Our pride in Garden District will be on display to the thousands of Tucsonans who pass by daily.
An update is in order on the printing of the signs themselves. The contract with Cook & Co was signed and a down payment paid in late October. Cook & Co indicated it would be at least a month to complete fabrication. We hope the signs will be finished by the end of March, 2022.
When the fabrication is complete, the signs will go to the City of Tucson's Dept. of Transportation and Mobility's Sign Shop and we will be at the mercy of their schedule. The City will allow only their own Sign Shop to install neighborhood identification signs on the existing poles with street names. The City will charge us $50 per pair to install. 48 of the sign pairs will be installed as soon as the Sign Shop can schedule them. The six corners on Grant Rd, though, will not be put up yet. We will wait for Grant to be widened and construction completed before we request that our signs be hung on those street name poles.
This project has been literally YEARS in the making, including soliciting ideas and creating designs, completing surveys, interviewing artists, choosing the printer, going back to the drawing board, choosing a different printer . . . you get the idea. We wanted to make the signs affordable for sponsorship by residents and businesses, so we requested donations only for the cost of fabrication, $150 per pair. We set aside $2700 of the treasury budget for the installation costs of $50 per pair for 54 pairs. We also received a total of $900 from residents who made partial donations. We will use the funds from the partial donations to help cover the installation costs, so we do not need to dip as deep into the treasury.
Donations towards installation costs are still very much welcome and we will acknowledge you in the newsletter. You can find options for donating on the GDNA website: thegardendistrict.org. We are a registered non-profit, so donations are tax deductible.
Thank you to everyone who was so generous - full and partial sponsors, residents and businesses. Finally, we are on the home stretch!
